May 6, 2001 - sportsWIRE was looking for a new direction for their television
specials in Spring 2000, and they found it! Our TV camera were at the right
place at the right time as the danvers Kiwanis Special Olympics team came
home with some serious hardware at the 2000 Essex County Regional games
at Peabody's BishopFenwick High School. Kiwanis members won four gold medals
in four individual track events. Corey "Hardcore" O'Keefe (pictured center)
was one of them, and he also came home with a silver from the shotput throw.
"Dangerous" Dana Mathiason (right) won in track and softball as well.
#5 - Eagles

Boston College takes a photo op with thier new trophy
March 20, 1999 - If there was ever a game to make you appreciate college
hockey, this was it. With a Hockey East tournament title on the line, the
BC Eagles and the UNH Wildcats took to the FleetCenter ice. One might think
that 4-1 1st period lead might be safe, but UNH scored three consecutive
goals, including 2 goals in ten seconds, to tie the game at four. Current
Maple Leaf prospect, Blake Bellefeuille, can be credited for BC's victory
as he scored on then-sophomore goalie, Ty Conklin, in overtime to bring
the Lamerillo trophy to Chestnut Hill.
#4

Danvers players celebrate during the 2001 MIAA Division II Title
Game
March 18, 2001 - The Falcons of Danvers High School have always been
a dominate force in local high school athletics. This was their shining
moment when the blue shirts came from behind to steal the MIAA Division
II State Title from the Wolfpack of Bostin Latin. Bryan Duggan scored the
game winner with less than a minute remaining while senior goalie, Scott
Bevan, stayed solid between the pipes to lead the team to the 4-3 win,
and the state title.
#3

An aerial view of BC's Hockey East championship celebration.
March 17, 2001 - Having already won the Hockey East Regular Season
Title and the Beanpot, the Boston College Eagles continued their winning
ways during the 2001 Hockey East Tournament championship. BC sent the UMass
Lowell "Cinderella" squad back to campus in the semi-finals and gained
a 5-3 victory the next evening to send the PC Friars back to Providence.
After winning their second Lamerillo trophy in three years, BC went on
to win the 2001 NCAA National Championship by defeating Maine, Michigan,
and North Dakota in the NCAA Division I Tournament.
#2
- Hockey East Title is Decided in 2 Seconds :
A Collection of Pics from the 2000 Hockey East Tournament Championship
March 18, 2000 - The great part of college hockey and sports in general
is that any given team can win on any given day. Hockey East's championship
weekend gave proof to that statement. Semi-Final Friday saw two upsets
with Maine dominating #1 seed Boston University and the defending champion
BC Eagles sliding past a tough UNH team. BC fans hoped for a Hockey East
3-Peat while Maine fans wanted their first divisional title in seven years.
If penalties were points, this game would be 10-10 after the first period
but the first ended 0-0. BC goalie, Scott Clemmensen, kept the Eagles'
net empty throughout the first, except for when his own mask crossed the
goal line when it was knocked off his head early in the game. The second
period was similar to the first. The Eagles' defense stayed solid while
Maine's defensive-awareness began to dwindle which game BC many scoring
opportunities. BC tried to capatalize on these chances but luckily for
the Orono faithful, A Maine stick blade would reach the puck just in time
to dump it out of their defensive zone. Forty minutes were played without
score but that would change as Maine was the first to find the back of
the net in the third. Cory LaRose scored the unassisted goal which gave
Maine the mental-edge over the Eagles for a majority of the third period.
The back-and-forth battle continued until the final mintue of regulation
when after two timeouts, Bobby Allen scored a goal that Blackbears goalie,
Matt Yeats, could not stop. BC players and fans rejoiced over the goal
and hoped to come out strong in ovetime but Maine prevented a fourth period
from existing by scoring with under three seconds remaining. Niko Dimitrakos
was the game hero by scoring five seconds after sportsWIRE associate, Jon
Glidden, said that Maine could and would score before the completion of
regulation time. Maine won the game, the Hockey East championship, and
the notched their second consecutive upset; a feat they can only match
once for the remainder of the season.

Gets "Wild" in the West :
August 12-26, 200 - One of the greatest opportunities sportsWIRE has ever
had was to host our show on the road. The "Wild West Road Trip" was by
far the best of the four trips. We hosted our show from the WCW Nitro Grill,
Dodger Stadium, NBC Studios, Muscle Beach, Disneyland, Edison International
Field, and the Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim. The show, which featured the
2000 Specila Olympics Regionals, was aired on BEV-TV 10 for13 straight
weeks and recieved an enourmous response. Not only did we have great success
with television, but we featured coverage of two Major League Baseball
games featuring the Dodgers and the Angels. The trip was a huge success
and made for a great time for cast, crew and viewers alike. |
