JANUARY 1999
With the new year only two days old, Gastonguay, as well as former
sportsWIRE contributor, Jon Glidden, went to an event that Gastonguay promoted
exclusively; "clashOF theCOASTS", an NHL battle between the Mighty Ducks
of Anaheim and the Boston Bruins at the FleetCenter. News and notes
from Super Bowl XXXIII and the NHL All-Star game also appeared on his sports
pages.
FEBRUARY 1999
Continuing with his "trial and error" based web design, Gastonguay
made another sports page for his "Mentos Kid" site. This page was titled
simply enough, "The Sports Page", and it featured reports from ESPN and
FOX's sports web sites. At this time, the site was updated more often.
Gastonguay's other media ventures included designing the bulletins
for the BHS-22 Educational access channel in Beverly, Massachusetts.
MARCH 1999
Still using the "Sports Page" concept, Gastonguay discovered an exciting
brand of college hockey, "Hockey East". He attended the confrence championship
and relayed the game's events in full detail. The Sports Page continued
to cover Hockey East throughout the 1999 NCAA Championship Tournament.
APRIL 1999
New web site features in April included the inaugural fan voting awards
on the Sports Page. Fans were able to vote interactivley for their favorites
from the past year.
Also, April of '99 marked Gastonguay's first vacation since entering
the world of media. Even in his own personal time, he felt the need to
express himself on the web. Disney
"Mentos" Style featured some pics and highlights from his trip
to central Florida along with his family and friends.
After his trip, Gastonguay returned to the world of sports media and
gave his attention to the local roller hockey scene. A local league, the
"WRHL", had employed the services of Gastonguay and Jon Glidden, on a volunteer
basis.
MAY 1999
The name "Sports Wire" made it's way back to the web during another
revision of the "Mentos Kid Page". The title was changed graphiclly to
appear as sportsWIRE. The page renovation served as a project for
Gastonguay's High School media class.
After some personnel changes at MediaOne cable access, Gastonguay
turned back into the field of cable access television. Plans were srawn
up to air a WRHL tournament on Beverly's cable system in June.
JUNE 1999
sportsWIRE covered it's first World Wrestling Federation event on June
8, 1999. The event consisted of unbroadcasted matches, and tapings of sunday
night HEAT and RAW IS WAR. The results of the bouts were listed
on the "Mentos
Wrestling Federation" site.
This month also saw the continued frustrations of cable television
failure as equipment problems prevented the broadcast of the WRHL's Spring
Championship tournament just 24 hours removed from the WWF event.
JULY 1999
"If at first you don't succeed, Try and Try again" This quote
proved to be more than true for Mike Gastonguay's ventures in cable television
as he, along with Jon Glidden and camera operator, Susan Cravatas, taped
the first successful WRHL tournament in late July.
Earlier in the month, sportsWIRE added a page focusing on the
1999
Major League Baseball All-Star game from Fenway Park.
AUGUST 1999
The first of the month brought Gastonguay's debut as a producer. Operating
under the name MediaOne Sports, The first WRHL televison broadcast
entered homes on August 1, 1999. Along with color commentator, Jon Glidden,
Gastonguay carried the series of three shows, one for each game of the
WRHL Summer tournament.
SEPTEMBER 1999
After a month of success on BEV-TV 3 in Beverly, Mike turned his attention
back to the web. His "Mentos Kid Page" celebrated it's first anniversay
under the Geocities server. Mike began developments on another sports page
focusing mainly on the WRHL roller hockey. His goal was to unsweeten the
news of the WRHL from it's official page. Providing a new attitude on the
league's news, the site was named appropriately enough, WRHL
Attitude.
Gastonguay also added some multimedia
video and audio features to sportsWIRE as another page was added
to the Geocities server.
Having scored some excellent seats to a Red Sox home game, Mike along
with Glidden and friend Jamie Michalski (a.k.a. dj whatever) headed
to fenway to see the Sox
tangle with the Tigers and coverage of the game was delivered to
the sportsWIRE web site.
OCTOBER 1999
Gastonguay's coverage of the BoSox payed off as sportsWIRE followed
the Sox's triumphs and tragedies during the 1999
Divisional and League Championship Series.
The biggest news from this month was the addition of sportsWIRE
TV to the fall lineup of BEV-TV cable. While the idea of a
sports highlights show was not an original one, Mike was still pleased
with the result.
DECEMBER 1999
sportsWIRE continued to air as a monthly television series in
Beverly. Gastonguay recieved his own personal camera equipment over the
holidays, for use in future episodes. New additions to the web site included
a new page for Hockey
East news and stats.
