JANUARY 2000
With the new millenium in full swing, sportsWIRE's attention
went to the NFL playoffs and to the Super Bowl. sportsWIRE covered
the game on it's "footballWIRE"
page on their new host "FreeServers". sportsWIRE has had more success
on FreeServers than it has on any other web hosting company. Even
the "Mentos Kid Page" (which was last updated on january 4th, 2000) moved
to the FreeServers server.
sportsWIRE also contiuned their promotion of the clashOF
theCOASTS as they were on hand for a second battle of the Mighty
Ducks of Anaheim and the Boston Bruins at the FleetCenter in Boston.
FEBRUARY 2000
As the WRHL grew into the "Beverly Roller Hockey League", Mike Gastonguay
undertook the task of developing and maintaining the youth
and intermediate division web pages. This month also brough the
debut of Beverly
High School sports to sportsWIRE TV as Gastonguay and Glidden
covered selected games from the '99-2000 regular season.
sportsWIRE's web site was also active as they covered the events
from the 50th
annual NHL All-Star game. As the month progressed, sportsWIRE
continued to cover hockey news on it's site with the addition of the "hockeyWIRE"
page. An "nbaWIRE"
page soon followed, providing information to basketball fans.
sportsWIRE invited international audiences to visit thier page
by providing links
and translations
of the page on their server.
MARCH 2000
College sports took center stage in March as sportsWIRE covered
the men's basketball
and hockey
championships. Hockey East was still covered extensively on the
site as sportsWIRE gave special attention to the confrence in web
design and televison projects. This was also the month that sportsWIRE
TV changed channels as the entire BEV-TV network changed hands from
channel 3 to channel 10.
March also brought the "second
annual sportsWIRE awards". Fans were invited to vote for
their favorite athletes and sports moments from the past year.
APRIL 2000
Another April trip was on the bill for Mike this month. sportsWIRE's
chief brought his video equipment to Orlando, Florida for the first ever
"sportsWIRE
roadTRIP". Footage was taped from the All-Star Cafe, Disney's Wide
World of Sports, and the ESPN Club. This footage was combined with the
last roller hockey broadcast in sportsWIRE history. A page of links
was provided concerning his Florida visit titled "sportsWIRE
springBREAK"
When the 2000 baseball season began, sportsWIRE developed another
page for baseball information and news. The new page was titled "baseballWIRE".
April also saw the continuation of wrestling coverage as sportsWIRE
officially adopted the wrestling page that had been active with the "Mentos
Kid" pages of the project's prior era. The new page was called "sportsWIRE's
wrestling information page". Among the information on that page
was pre and post event coverage of "WrestleMania
2000". Speaking about wrestling, the footballWIRE page broke
the news of Vince McMahon's new "XFL" football league. April updates to
footballWIRE
included the XFL story as well as results from the 2000 Draft.
MAY 2000
Having broken all affiliations with the BRHL, sportsWIRE developed
a base company called "wireMEDIA". The wireMEDIA
Network would be a home for sports, entertainment, music, and
travel on the web. In fact, wireMEDIA's inauguration brought another
brand of sport to sportsWIRE TV, the Special Olympics. During this
change, the sportsWIRE web site added a new title, "sportsWIRE wireWEB"
and underwent a major revision.
AUGUST 2000
A two month hiatus saw the renewal of spirit in wireMEDIA. With
a great season of football awaiting, "mikey G" (his nickname developed
for the wireMEDIA network) established a fan poll in which football
fans could cast their vote for an "All Fan Team" and have their picks compete
against his own personal picks. This could have been one of the biggest
promotional measures in the history of sportsWIRE. It came at a
great time as sportsWIRE began work on it's second road trip. "sportsWIRE
TV's wildWEST roadTRIP 2000" combined the action of the Massachusetts regional
Special Olympics with a "mock" tour of Las Vegas and Southern California,
in hopes of mikeyG hosting the show from the Arrowhead
Pond of Anaheim. He visited the WCW
Nitro Grill, Dodger
Stadium, Muscle Beach, NBC studios, Disneyland, and
the Edison
International Field and announced the winners of the fan poll
from each location. This show was argueably the best show ever to air on
BEV-TV 10. In addition to the television taping, many features were geared
towards the sportsWIRE web site. Coverage of west coast sporting
events (including Angels and Dodgers game) were added to the page along
with other features pertaining to sports on the "sportsWIRE
wildWEST adventure2000" page.
The entire wireMEDIA network was involved in this roadTRIP as
well. In the "wildWEST
adventure2000", they featured links and pictures of the crew from
various points on the west coast.
Having been one of the most successful month in the project's history,
sportsWIRE celebrated it's second anniversary in style.
SEPTEMBER 2000
In September, "musiKWIRE" (a new part of the wireMEDIA network)
began some work with some of it's friends in "Fallout"
(a band led by Gastonguay's friend, Keith Veilleux) and dj
whatever. wireMEDIA taped two shows from the James Place
Stage in Amesbury, Ma. The shows were successful. However, neither tape
made the air due to conflicting projects. Both tapes are currently in wireMEDIA's
independent archive.
The other project consuming most of wireMEDIA's time and attention
was mikeyG's stint as public address announcer of Hurd Stadium in
Beverly. Gastonguay was recruited by new Beverly High School athletic director,
Elaine Paradis, in order to bring student energyback to the Panther football
program. Gastonguay and Paradis assembled a student coverage team consisting
of Phil Bjork, and former assistant captain of Panther varsity hockey,
Ryan Laracy.
OCTOBER 2000
sportsWIRE did break from football long enough to give attention
to the only meeting of the NHL's Mighty Ducks and Bruins during the 2000-2001
season. "coastCLASH
3" was covered by Gastonguay, but he was unable to attend the game
as it was played in Anaheim, California.
NOVEMBER 2000
mikeyG's season of P.A. work fueled the fire that ws the thrid
roadTRIP
show. Gastonguay was the voice of the 102nd
Beverly/Salem Thanksgiving game at Hurd Stadium. Ryan Laracy served
as camera man for the final sports taping of 2000.
DECEMBER 2000
This month marked the begining of the end for the roadTRIP series.
wireMEDIA
began a "sportsWIRE newYORK" campaign. The campaign began as a measure
to prepare New York audiences for sportsWIRE should the project
relocate and be strictly geared to a New York based audience. The last
roadTRIP
included footage from ESPNZone,
WWF
New York, and Madison
Square Garden, where the roadTRIP crew was treated to
a
Rangers/Avalanche
NHL battle which was featured on the sportsWIRE
newYORK web site.
